The Flutter Verses is a website that produces articles about birds and important publications that illustrate all these birds. This book features stunning photographs of 515 bird species – including photographs from two prestigious international photo competitions organized especially for this book.
For the 75 species for which photographs could not be obtained, the highly acclaimed artist Tomasz Cofta has created highly realistic illustrations. The book also includes 60 species that are so poorly known that their threat status cannot be assessed (referred to as Data Deficient Species).
The articles begins with an in-depth introduction that discusses the various threats birds face in today’s world, such as habitat loss, climate change, and human activities. It also explains the processes used to assess their conservation status, such as population trends and extinction risk, and how these findings are applied to establish priorities for conservation efforts worldwide.
The content is then divided into seven distinct regional sections, each focusing on a specific part of the globe: Europe and the Middle East; Africa and Madagascar; Asia; Australasia; the Oceania Islands; North America, Central America, and the Caribbean; and South America.
Within each regional section, readers will find detailed explorations of the unique conservation challenges and issues facing birds in that area. These sections also highlight critical hotspots for threatened species, shedding light on the regions that require immediate attention. Additionally, each chapter includes an extensively illustrated directory showcasing the most endangered bird species within the region. This directory provides a wealth of information, including the birds’ geographical distribution, current conservation status, population estimates, and the primary threats they face. It also outlines essential actions needed to protect these species and their habitats.
Together, the chapters offer an engaging and visually rich resource for anyone interested in understanding global bird conservation and the urgent need to protect these remarkable creatures.
